MED-C201: Anatomy and Physiology

This course is designed
to introduce and familiarize the student with the structure
and function of the human body. This course provides
a basic foundation for further study in the clinical aspects
of the Medical Office Administration profession. Topics
covered include the structural units of the human body,
the chemistry of living things, a review of cell processing,
and a review of individual body systems.
Upon completion of
this course the Medical Office Administration student
will be able to correctly identify and name parts of the
human body and relate the chapter materials to his or
her job duties within the Medical Office Administration
profession.

MED-C202: Medical Terminology (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course is designed
to introduce and familiarize the student with the medical
terminology used to describe the structure and functions
of the human body. This knowledge provides a foundation
for further study in the clinical aspects of the Medical
Office Administration profession. Topics include medical
words and phrases and medical abbreviations related to
the systems of the human body and disease processes.
Upon completion of
this course, the Professional Medical Office Administration
student will be able to correctly spell, define, pronounce,
define and relate the chapter materials to their job duties
within the Medical Office profession.

MED-A503: English Fundamentals - Grammar
and Writing Skills for the Health Care Professional (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course is designed
to introduce and familiarize the Medical Office Administration
student with the basic grammar and writing skills required
in the professional medical office setting. This course
will review, facilitate, and reinforce medical terminology
skills while enhancing writing skills required for a successful
medical office administration career. Topics covered within
this course include medically oriented grammar, syntax,
spelling, word use, number use and capitalization related
to the activities regularly performed in a medical office
setting.
Upon completion of
this course, the student will be able to use proper grammar,
spelling, and sentence structure appropriate to the medical
field.

MED-A504: Math Fundamentals (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course is designed
to provide the Medical Office Administration student with
the requisite math skills commonly utilized within a medical
office setting. The curriculum teaches basic application-level
mathematical functions that require technical and critical
thinking skills. Students will learn how to apply basic
mathematical concepts within the medical office setting. Topics
covered in this course include the importance of mathematics
to the healthcare profession, the application of math
skills as they apply to the medical field, and other vital
skills required for medical office work.
Upon completion of
this course, the student will be able to use numerical
systems, appropriate measurement systems, whole numbers,
decimals and fractions to perform appropriate medical
dosage conversions.

MED-A501: Keyboarding in the Medical
Office (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course is designed
to introduce and familiarize the Medical Office Administration
student with medical keyboarding techniques. The student
will become familiar with various medical report formats
including the history & physical, operative, consultation
and other common medical reports. This
course will expose the student to medical dictation concepts
and basic medical transcription skills, as well as review
terms and phrases encountered in other medical courses
and on the job.
Upon completion of
this course, the Medical Office Administration student
will be able to type medical reports using basic punctuation
and grammar commonly found in the medical office setting,
while utilizing the correct medical form layout settings
and margins.

MED-A505: Technical Writing
for the Medical Office Professional
(4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course will focus
on the writing and composition skills of the Medical Office
Administration student. The
student will review the composition process, including
editing and proof-reading. Special emphasis is placed
on developing a professional writing style. This course
will also review, facilitate, and reinforce medical terminology
and basic grammar skills.
Upon completion of
this course, the student will demonstrate mastery of medically
oriented grammar, syntax, spelling, word use, number use,
capitalization, effective research skills and the written
presentation of ideas related to the activities regularly
performed in a professional medical setting.

MED-A506: Medical Transcription (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course will reinforce
and integrate skills learned in the prerequisite keyboarding
class (MED-A501). The Medical Office Administration student
will apply the appropriate medical terminology, transcribe
different types of medical reports, check the transcription
to the text report, make needed corrections, and submit
corrected transcription reports. The student will further
develop his or her transcription and formatting skills
using a variety of medical reports including the history & physical,
operative, consultation and other common medical reports.
Upon completion of
this course, the Medical Office Administration student
will be able to transcribe medical reports typically found
in the medical office setting, utilizing the correct medical
form layout settings and margins, required in the professional
medical office setting.

(4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course is designed
to introduce and familiarize the Medical
Office Administration student with general administrative
procedures and practices that are utilized in medical
offices. The student will become familiar with the latest
office technologies and how they are used to facilitate
the flow of information in a medical office. The student
will use a simulated office environment to learn and practice
his or her administrative skills.
Upon completion of
this course the Medical Office Administration student
will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the requisite
professional behaviors and general procedures required
in the professional medical office setting.

MED-C204: Medical Law & Ethics (4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)

course will introduce and
familiarize the Medical
Office Administration student
with the basic legal knowledge
required in a routine medical
office setting. The student
will become familiar with
the latest legal issues
encountered within the
medical field. This course
will introduce the student
to the legal concepts surrounding
standard of care, scope
of employment, criminal
and civil acts, contracts,
negligence, and ethical
concepts as they relate
to the medical profession.
A review of managed care,
HIPAA and other health
care legislative rulings
will be discussed in each
section throughout this
course. Relevant case proceedings
will be used to illustrate
the legal and ethical aspects

include a review of financial
statements, journalizing,
posting to specific ledger
accounts, the accounting
cycle and its impact
on the office setting,
bank statements and cash
handling, and the recording

Applications in the Medical
Office
(4 weeks, 3 credits, 84 clock hours)
This course will introduce
and familiarize the Medical Office Administration student
with essential computer application knowledge required
in the modern computerized medical office. In this course, the
student will be exposed to a variety of standard medical
administrative computerized tasks associated with carrying
out the operations and daily management of the professional
medical office. The student will use simulated medical
software applications to gain an understanding of tasks
such as appointment scheduling, patient registration,
procedure posting, payment posting, secondary insurance
billing, patient billing, patient collections and insurance
tracking and follow-up.
Upon completion of
this course, the Medical Office Administration student
will be able to perform the daily management of the professional
medical office tasks using computer applications as required
by office professional standards and today's professional
medical office setting.

MED-B601: Health Insurance
and Reimbursement
(8 weeks, 6 credits, 168 clock hours)
This course is designed to teach students about major insurance programs, federal health care legislation and programs, and claims and the process of completing claims forms efficiently, effectively, and in compliance with payor guidelines and regulations.
Using your previous knowledge of Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology, this course will review, facilitate, and reinforce medical terminology skills while introducing the student to health insurance, managed care, the life cycle of an insurance claim, legal and regulatory guidelines, CMS reimbursement issues, CMS claim forms, commercial claims, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and workers compensation. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to accurately and efficiently complete claim forms in conjunction with the required payor guidelines. The student will also have all fundamental knowledge necessary to take additional courses in Medical Billing and Coding (ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, and CPT) and to pursue a career in that field.
